Most people think of black holes as giant swirling holes that form when a star dies. This is partialy correct, they do form when stars die, but they aren't very big. They are actualy a star crushed to singularity by colapsing in on its self. The big part is the event horizen, the event horizen is what most people think of as a black hole, its actualy the maximum distance away from the black hole you have to be to get trapped and be unable to escape.
