Q: If you could spend a day with anyone of your choice (alive or deceased), who would it be and what would you talk about?

A: There are so many interesting people and topics to choose from. However, at this particular time, I would like to spend a day with Abraham Lincoln. I would ask him why, if we was so concerned about the wrongs of slavery, was he contemplating a plan to send all of the freed slaves back to Africa. I would also ask him why he delayed so long in signing the Emancipation Proclamation after if it was enacted by Congress? As a result many slaves did not know until much later that they had in fact been freed. Additionally, I would ask Lincoln whether he was really comfortable being portrayed in history as the president who freed my ancestors when in actuality he did so only as a last resort. This is something I learned by reading Lerone Bennett's (Ebony Magazine) latest book.

Q: What is the single most important issue facing the Black community today?

A: The state of the educational system is the most serious problem confronting our community. Our schools typically are inadequately funded as compared to schools with majority white students. The buildings are often dilapidated and the scarcity of resources often means that our children have to share textbooks, which are often outdated. There is also a need for more qualified teachers who are dedicated to helping our children succeed and excel.

Q: How would you most like to be remembered?

A: I would like to be remembered as being compassionate, thoughtful, and giving.

Q: What is the best advice you've ever received?

A: The best advice I've ever received was, "Don't expect or solely depend on someone else to give you what you must accomplish in life for yourself. If you depend solely on others, you may be disappointed, rejected, denied, etc. If you are fortunate to receive help, consider it as an added blessing and not a replacement for whatever you accomplished on your own."

Answer to trivia question: Both Gloria Vaughn and Rudolph Vaughn attended Overbrook High School with the late Wilt Chamberlain.
