| The religous beliefs of the ancient egyptians |
The ancient Egyptians had many rituals in the way the worshipped their gods. First of all, only certain people could be direct links to the gods. This gave those people great power. The commoners could not really talk directly to the gods. High priests were also the main advisors to the pharaoh and he himself was a god (a form of Horus.) For instance, when someone in the royal family was sick, the high priests would perform spells over him or her. If they believed the person was mortally ill, a priest would help the sick person memorize the Book of the Dead, a book of spells needed in the afterlife. Other rituals include the mummification ritual and the going to temples for religious services. Temples were built for every important god or goddess and for most other gods and goddesses as well. Most early pharaohs built temples to themselves in the form of their pyramids. Later pharaohs did not do this; however, they did build elaborate tombs to hold valuables for the afterlife.
