| The Bells Toll |

Nick said to Derek as he was getting off of the bed, "I'm starving. I haven't
had anything to eat since breakfast, so why don't we go to that pub in
Avalon?"
Derek rubbing his aching neck said, "I'm hungry too. Across the street
from the Town Hall is a pub. We should go there to eat. Maybe we can strike up a conversation and find out about how the bells are rung."
"Derek, so far ya haven't had any luck gettin these people to talk to
ya. What makes you think we'll have luck at the pub?" The young man asked
his boss as he was putting on his tan hiking boots.
"Well I figure that after the men have a few drinks in them, they'll
be willing to discuss anything...even the tolling of the bells." Derek replied
as he was putting on his black leather jacket. Both men left Nick's room and
headed for the pub.
McAllister's Pub
Nick and Derek entered the noisy and smoke filled pub. Country music
was blaring from the multicolored juke box. The two men sat down at the bar.
"What'll it be?" The bald and fat man said to Nick in a gruff tone.
"I'll have a cheese burger with fries and a Budlite." He said to the
man. Derek said to the guy, "I'll have the same thing except for the Budlite.
I want a Red Dog."
"That's stuff is pretty strong. Sure ya can handle it, Derek? The last
time ya had strong stuff, there was another one of ya walkin around. Rachel
and Alex filled me in." Nick said to the older man when the fat man brought
them their drinks.
Joking with his younger collegue he said, "What are ya a wimp?
Ordering lite beer instead of real beer ."
Punching his gut he said, "I'm watching my weight. Can't have a
six pack like this and drink real beer Too many calories in it."
He took a sip of his beer. "Good tasting stuff."
"Ordering a cheese burger and fries isn't exactly healthy, Nick."
Derek said with a big grin on his face. He took a sip of his beer and made a
face and said, "This stuff is bitter." The food finally arrived and both men
dug in. They were starving so they ate in silence.
"Wanna play pool with those guys over there, Derek?" Nick asked the
precept. He then finished the last of his beer.
"Sounds like a good idea, Nick. Maybe we can get these men to talk about
the tolling of the bells." He said getting up from the bar stool. Nick followed
suit and headed for the pool table.
