The Sun
Every civilisation has its Sun God. The one we are most familiar with is Appolo, the son of Zeus. He is always portrayed as the perfect man.
The Moon
Diana the huntress sums up the goddess of the moon - beautiful, feminine but cruel.
Mercury
The messenger of the gods, with his winged helmet and feet, is always ready for action.
Venus
The goddess of love. She is graceful, beautiful and sexual. She presided over temples where those who worshiped her made love.
Mars
THe god of war is always shown in battledress looking strong and aggressive. He was fortunate in battle but unlucky in love.
Jupiter
The thrower of thunderbolts and protector of the city of rome in ancient myth.
Saturn
Orininally a god of the land and crops but came to symbolise the saturnalia - a very important public holiday.
Uranus
Not the most attractive mythical god. He had an incestuous relationship with his mother, earth, and from this all living things were born. Saturn rebelled against him and he was castrated in the ensuring battle.
Neptune
God of the sea, lakes and rivers. He took this role on from Poseidon, the sea-god. Neptune lived in the depths and was transproted by a chariot pulled by water horses.
Pluto
Ruled over the underworld and the land of death situated beyond the river Styx. No creature who was taken there ever came back alive. Pluto often wore a helmet which made him invisible and even more fearsome. |
