The Lone Star State

Welcome to the official web sight to get facts on Texas. This site was
created to help with research on projects. I hope you enjoy and make
the best of this websight.

Texas has belonged to many country and was once its own nation before
it became part of the U.S.A.

Before part of Mexico it belonged to Spain
which ruled Mexico. When mexico took over it
was under the dictatorship of Santa Anna also
know as Santie Annie Bannanie. As we progress
into how texas became part of the U.S.A
I will tell you how he got that name.

Well i will tell you about the war that led Texas into become a country of
its own and then I will tell you howit became part of the U.S.A. I will
also note the six flags that have flown over Texas.

Well as many people know that the Alamo was very important in Texas
History. The Alamo held one of the most important battles in the war so
Texans could gain independence. There were many fighters for the Texans.
About 168 fighters, but that was nothing compared to the size of the
Mexican Army who had a couple thousand men.

All of the soldiers at the Alamo are considered heros even if they aren't
remembered like Davey Crocket, William Barret Travis, and James Bowie, but
they are all important in how Texas got its independence.

During the battle at the Alamo the soldiers fighting for Texas they thought
that General Fannen was on his way with more troops. They fought with
the succrity that he would soon come. General Fannen never made it.

The war at the Alamo lasted for 13 days. During those 13 days when the
Texas army was the weakest it is said that something happened. Wheather
or not it is true no one knows, but it was said that there was a line drawn.
William Barret Travis then said, "All those who wish to countinue fighting
step over this line." Everyone did so the fighting went on. To step over that
line was like suiccide, but the men were willing to die so that so Sam Houston
could gather more troops. William B. Travis was considered a true hero along
with all the other men who fought because of their bravery and because they
were willing to sacrafice there lives for Texas to gain its independence.

(Today what is in question is, "If those men had never fought that battle would
Texas be where it is now, would it even be part of the U.S.A.)

Some of the reasons that led to the defete at "The Alamo" was that some of the
men were outnumbered, there was a big gap in the Alamo wall where the main plaza,
they didn't have a single leader, and the Alamo was also to large for Travis
and his troops to defend.

Then again the Alamo defenders had many strenghths too. In some ways they had good
defense position, the walls of the Alamo were 2 to 3 ifeet thick and 12 feet high,
they had 20 cannons includding one powerful 18-pounder, their suply of beef and corn
were high and the water supply was sufficient.

Even thought all the defenders of the Alamo were put to death, several
people didsurvive. The women and children that were in the Alamo were
not put to death. They were the wives of some defenders. Ana Salazar
de Esparza, wife of Gregorio Esparza; Juana Navarro. Her husband was
part of houston's army. Suzzana Dickenson was also a defenders wife.
Her, her daughter, Angalina, and Travises slave were realesed so they
could spread word of the disaster at Gonzales. Madam Andrea Candelaria,
another tejano woman, nursed James bowie was recognized 50 years later
for her nursing.

Texas won there independence in the battle of San Jacinto. The battle of
San Jacinto took place on April 21, 1836. The Mexicans had about 1390
soldiers which greatly outnumbered the amount of soldiers fighting for
Texas. (It is said that a young lady came and told general Sam Houston
that they should attack at 3:00 pm because the Mexicans would be caught
off guard. At 3:00 the Mexicans took naps after they had eaten a large
lunch. The lady who told Sam Houston is also known as the Yellow Rose Of
Texas.) When the Texans attaked the mexicans they caught them with there
pants down or off guard. They were taking a nap and couldn't get to there
guns fast enough. The battle at the alamo took 13 days, for the texans to
defeat the mexicans at San Jacinto it took 18 minutes. This battle and the
one at the Alamo are the 2 most important battles in Texas because it won
Texas her independence.
