Hi, Thanks for visiting my website.
The purpose of this site is to tell you about a conservation expedition that I shall shortly be participating in, and to ask for help and donations to help me raise the £2500 (£ Sterling) I need in order to join this expedition.
A PLEA FOR HELP FROM A VOLUNTEER
Hi! My name is Shari Jackson, I'm 22 yrs old and live in Salisbury, England. I have recently finished University and am now taking a 'year out' before entering full-time employment. As part of this year, I have been accepted as a Frontier volunteer, to participate on an expedition to Tanzania in July 1999. The expedition will run for ten weeks and is part of a continuous project maintained by Frontier and the University of Dar es Salaam. As Frontier is not a charity, a large proportion of the cost of its projects are funded through the contributions of volunteers. This is because it wished to maintain complete flexibility, a trait which would be hampered if held accountable to major contributors. Hence I will need to raise £2500 in order to participate.

My role on the expedition, as a qualified SCUBA diver, will be to assist in the collection of scientific data of the coastal area.
I am currently in the process of arranging several fund-raising initiatives including a sponsored swim, a workshop for local primary schools and designing and selling greetings cards. However I am still a long way off my target, so I am greatly in need of any help you may be able to offer.
PLEASE SUPPORT THE PROJECT THROUGH ANY DONATIONS YOU ARE ABLE TO OFFER

TO HELP CONVINCE YOU, HERE'S MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT......
WHAT IS FRONTIER?
- A professional tropical natural resource conservation, research and development agency
- An international NGO with offices in the United Kingdom, Tanzania, Vietnam and Mozambique
- It runs volunteer-based projects in tropical countries which are commissioned by local authorities
Frontier is a non-profit making organisation that was established in 1989, to undertake essential conservation work in tropical areas under threat. Each Frontier project represents a unique and valuable scientific investigation which is initiated by a direct invitation from the host country's government and is set up in partnership with their research and conservation agencies. The projects are long-term and are making a real difference to tropical wildlife and habitat survival.

THE FRONTIER TANZANIAN MARINE EXPEDITION:
THE PLACE: The mangrove fringed waters off the Tanzanian coast support a complex yet fragile marine eco-system, which includes hundreds of species of reef-fish , corals, seagrasses, sharks , dolphins and turtles . These species are under constant threat and face possible extinction due to the pressure of man.
THE PROBLEM: Dynamite fishing, along with seine netting, pollution and uncontrolled tourism have all taken their toll on the delicate web of marine life. Frontier teams working along the coast of Tanzania have recorded up to 40 dynamite blasts in one day. Without survey data, protective management policies can be neither developed nor implemented.
THE PROGRAMME: Over a 6 year period, from 1989 to 1995, 200 Frontier volunteers carried out more than 6000 dives in the coastal waters around Mafia Island resulting in the setting up of Tanzania's first Marine Park. Building on that success, the Tanzanian Marine Programme aims to provide further critical data on biodiversity levels in other closely linked habitats to the area.
THE PEOPLE: Training Tanzanian counterparts is an essential part of the work. Volunteers work alongside trainee fisheries officers and students from local institutions. The expeditions operate from a semi-permanent base-camp and tented satellite camps , relying on local produce and using traditional sailing dhow for travelling to the survey sites.
THE PURPOSE:
The aim of the Tanzanian Marine Programme is to survey as broad a section of the coastal zone as possible to discover the most threatened areas. Frontier has already helped to set up Tanzania's first Marine Park and work has now moved further south to include the Songo Songo Islands and the islands off the coast of Mtwara so as to integrate these habitats into the Marine Park.
SO YOU SEE IT IS A WORTHWHILE CAUSE - PLEASE HELP IN ANY WAY YOU CAN
