Make sure you are seeing a doctor,
who is most knowledgeable in the
field of Aniridia/Glaucoma. Make
sure your child gets an
ultrasound 2x a year until the
child reaches 8 years old. Don't
believe all of the horror stories
that are told. Some of the
research doesn't apply and it
can be very upsetting. Make
sure your child receives a battery
of psychologicals from a competent
psychologist who has experience with
visually impaired and blind students.
So that the school system can never
blame a failing program on your child.
Make sure your child receives all the
necessary tools he or she might need
to succeed. You must be a strong
advocate for your child. Even with
some sight make sure your child
learns Braille. Always make sure at PPT
meetings that you understand what's
going on. Ask questions if you don't happen to understand!
Also never sign anything to do with your
child's education unless you totally
understand. If need be always involve
yourself with a child advocate that is
knowledgeable with laws governing
children with disabilities. Feel
free to contact me if you have any
questions in regard to your
child's education with special needs.
Don't ever show weakness at PPT
meetings or a lack of understanding
ask questions and if you are not
happy with the answers you get
look into finding an attorney
that specializes in this type of law.
