| Did you know Ekans is snake spelt backwards? Even better, reverse snake pokemon Arbok, and you get "kobra". Cobra! Get it? "Rai", the start of Raichu's strange name actually means thunder in Japanese. Kabuto's name means helmet. A perfect name for this shellfish. In Japan, Koffing and Weezing were known as NY and LA, meaning New York and Los Angeles. Why? Because they are both clouds of toxic gas! I bet you've noticed that Cubone has the word bone in his name, but have you ever thought about its close relation, Marowak? It features the word "marow" in its name. Marrow - bone marrow - see? Ash's last name is Ketchum, but have you ever thought about what it means? Well, when you read it out loud, it sounds like "catch 'em" like in "Gotta catch 'em all". Red and Blue are very important colours in the world of Pokemon, but have you noticed any others? Give yourself a big pat on the back if you noticed that all of the town names eg. Cerulean, Vermillion etc. are colours too. Pallet, Ash's home town, is like a paint pallet! That Kangaskhan is a funny one half of her name comes from a kangaroo, a motherly beast that keeps its young in it's pouch. But the other half comes from Genghis Khan, a Mongol warlord whose empire stretched from the Black Sea to the Pacific! Clefairy and Clefable must have a few stories to tell after serving time in your Pokemon squad. Maybe that's why they have the words "fable" [story] and "fairy" [fairytale] in their names. Did you ever think about the names of the octopus Pokemon, Tentacool and Tentacruel? Both of their names end in opposite meanings, cool [calm] and cruel [mean]. Hitmonlee takes its name from high kickin' martial arts legend, Bruce Lee. If you didn't know that, you won't have realised that Hitmonchan's name is based on power punchin' karate star, Jackie Chan! The legendary bird Pokemon, Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres actually have their numbers in their names. Take a closer look... Do you see? Artic-UNO, Zap-DOS and Mol-TRES. Slowpoke evolves into Slowbro when a Shellder clamps onto its tail. This allows the Slowbro to balance on two legs, enabling it to use fighting moves. This benefits the Shelleder by allowing it to travel on land.
