First of all you have to have a plan..
You have to make a mental image of how you want the page to look?, like what type of images?, how long will the page be?, what's a good title?, all these question and more should be answered before you even start making a page

2nd when people come to your page, they want to see a lot of stuff, images, text, links, a pretty lay-out. They don't want to see a plain background a few images, and some links. That's why you have to have content, so people have something to look at while they are at your site. Also you have to keep adding more content so people will like to come back and see what you have added to your page.

Also, if you know your weak in html, I think you should take some lessons, you outta go to Htmlgoodies.com, they have a lot of stuff for you to look at content =) But really, you should look around there, they have lessons on tables, and basic html tags
