Pokemon are the biggest monsters to hit Japan since Godzilla ran rampant through Tokyo. They are an absolute cultural phenomena. The Japanese have entire stores devoted to these little beasts. Given the ongoing Japanese Pokemon craze, and Pokemon's growing popularity in the United States, a Pokemon N64 game was inevitable. Enter Pokemon Stadium.
Pokemon Stadium, being developed for the N64 by Nintendo, features all 151 Pocket Monsters, which players must train to fight in the "Pokemon Stadium." Battles between monsters are turned based, with the player inputting battle commands and then observing the battle action unfold.
The most innovative feature of Pokemon Stadium is its inclusion of the "64GB Pak." This little wonder plugs into an N64 controller's memory card slot, and allows players to plug in their Pokemon Game Boy Pak. With this device, players can use the Pokemon they have captured in their Game Boy adventures to fight in Pokemon Stadium. Pokemon Stadium also includes a feature that allows players to play the Game Boy Pak on their television set, using the N64 controller.
Other features of Pokemon Stadium:
Computer: Allows Game Boy players to save their creatures on the Pokemon Stadium Cart, thus freeing more memory space on the Game Boy cart for more monsters.
Picture Book: Creates an electronic picture book that displays a player's Pokemon collection in full 3D. Also shows detailed maps of a Pokemon's habitat.
Quick Look: Shows an overview of all the statistics for a player's Pokemon collection.
Collection: Shows vital statistics for all the monsters in the game. This way, players can size up the abilities of the creatures a Pokemon will be fighting, in order to train it appropriately.
Registration: This feature allows players to import their friend's Pokemon to fight against whatever they want.
Although the Pokemon will be rendered in full polygonal 3D, the creatures will retain their Japanese cutesy look. The battle sequences promise to be extremely realistic, however, with impressive fire and lightning effects.
Pokemon Stadium certainly appears to be the next natural choice for any Pokemon fanatic. If you can't stay away from the Pocket Monsters, you certainly won't want to miss the feature-laden Pokemon Stadium. This is a game to watch!
