RALLY ROUND BASDEO PANDAY
May 31st 2005 is a day that shall live in infamy in the history of Trinidad and Tobago. The arrest of the Leader of the Opposition is a signal that Trinidad and Tobago is no longer a free democratic society but is a Police State that is run by an immoral, visionless, rabid, evil and vindictive PNM dictatorship.
This event and other similar events that preceded it have serious consequences for our democracy, human rights and civil liberties.
Trinidad and Tobago is now in a state of crisis and is being led slowly towards a meltdown by the leadership of the PNM whose only interest is to hold on to political power at any cost and to divert attention away from the corruption of their Ministers. Yesterday's events represent the culmination of PNM efforts to victimize the former Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and his family.
The UNC notes too, that the arrest of the Leader of the Opposition was well timed by the Police to embarrass him in the presence of the Speaker of India’s Parliament and Members of an Indian Parliamentary delegation. This sends a message to the Commonwealth of Nations that Trinidad and Tobago is now a Police State and is run by a Government that is not interested in the ideal of democracy.
The UNC calls on every citizen to take careful note of these events over the last 24 hours and rally around the cause of human rights, democracy and justice. Mr. Panday has given his life to the struggle for justice, democracy and equality. Mr. Panday is no stranger to jail have been arrested and jailed in 1975 for leading what is now known as the “Bloody Tuesday” march.
The UNC is confident that its esteemed and visionary leader will meet this challenge with the same fortitude, resolution and courage with which he has met all the challenges of his long political career. The UNC is united and resolved to rally with its leader and to confront the forces of tyranny and evil.
