School Carnival Success
Newsome Park held a successful School carnival, Saturday May 20th.
Activities included Face Painting, Cake Walks and Games operated by teachers and PTA members. The auditorium was transformed into the ultimate air circus, complete with Obstacle and Air Jam Basketball Courses. Those who wanted to see a Fire Truck up close were given the opportunity by the Newport News Fire Department. What would a carnival be without food: Cotton Candy, Pizza, Snowcones, Soft Drinks and Chips allowed those attending plenty of substance to partake in a full day of fun.
Thanks to all of you who came. And for those who did not, we'll see you next year.
Red Cross Blood Drive
Mrs Vreeland's kindergarten class will be sponsoring a blood drive to be held Wednesday, June 7th in the School Auditorium from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Representatives from the Peninsula Red Cross will be on hand to coordinate our efforts. Flyers to be sent home by students will include an area by which you may enter your name and the time that you would like to schedule for donating blood. Please return the completed flyer to the school AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!
Give the gift of life; Donate blood!

| Presidential Message |
I would like to thank everyone for a wonderful year. As this being my first full year as President, I did not know what to expect. The beginning of the year started out a little rough getting settled in. Thanks to the PTA Officers, Volunteers, School Staff, and parents who helped me along the way, the tasks and duties that were performed were not as intimidating as the months passed.
In an effort to plant the seeds for next year, I request that everyone attend the PTA meeting on May 23, 2000 at 7:00 pm. This meeting will vital for the establishment of PTA board member positions for next year.
Have a wonderful summer!!
Meg Sharp

Virginia PTA/PTSA Highlights:
Plan Ahead for Bad Weather
There is no way to prevent natural disasters. Some result from rapidly changing weather conditions, such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and thunderstorms. Some are the result of earth movement, such as an earthquake. The following steps help prepare for a natural disaster.
1. Know which weather related disasters might occur in your area, such as flooding.
2. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
3. Hold a meeting to make a family emergency plan. Walk around the house and make sure every family member knows where water, electrical, and gas cut-off valves are.
4. For insurance purpose make a list of clothing and valuables. Place the list, including photographs or a videotape of items in a bank safety deposit box.
5. Designate a meeting place outside the home for your family in case you get separated during an emergency.
6. Post emergency phone numbers, know where storm centers will be located and have an out-of-state person to serve as your 'family contact'. After a disaster it is often easier to call long-distance than in the local area.
7. Have an EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT containing:
Flashlight with extra batteries
Non-electric can opener
Battery operated radio or TV
First-aid kit
Drinking water
Non-perishable food
Extra prescription medicine
Extra warm clothing
Blankets
Tool Kit
