Sexual Relations Outside of Marriage in the New Testament - Miscellaneous

The definition of marriage, also known as matrimony in the New Testament, is “the sacrament of the Church through which a Christian man and woman are united as husband and wife.” Marriage contracts are based on conjugal love and unity and dissolubility. Conjugal love is that the partners in a marriage express love to each other, “sealed by mutual trust and faithfulness.” Unity and dissolubility of a marriage means that there can only be one man and one woman in a marriage (New American Bible).

The New Testament deals with sexual relations outside of marriage. There are two different types of sexual relations that can occur outside of the marriage contract; adultery and homosexuality. Adultery, as defined by the Hutchinson Encyclopedia, is voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person other than his or her legal partner. Jesus and his disciples address the issue of adultery several times in the New Testament, preaching against it and showing those who have committed it how to get back on track. Homosexuality, as defined by dictionary.com, is the sexual activity with another of the same sex. In the New Testament, homosexuality is strictly forbidden to receive the kingdom of God.
