For over sixty years Elsan H. Stafford has been composing verse of uniquely lyrical quality imbued with sensitive insights and passionate thesis. Here, you will find but a
small sampling of some of his rare but beautiful poems (some published or pending publication) to inspire your soul to flights of passionate fancy and perhaps even stir
your heart to sheer mutiny!

TO ONE ONCE LOVED

After you've gone, what good the tears,
Or futile words that say
What happiness you gave to me
Once in a better day?

What good the songs that sing your praise,
In words you cannot hear?
Of joys you gave to those you loved,
From those who held you dear?

For who can know to whither we go...
Into a night, or a brighter day.
So hear these words that tell you now,
Not after you've gone away!

HOPE AND LAMENTATION

Morning and noon and eventide:
Three loves had I that were denied!
The first, a Rose that bloomed at dawn,
To blush for a moment ere it was gone!
The second, a Zephyr that came at noon,
Cool and sweet-scented, abating too soon!
The third came at twilight, a Wave from the sea,
Thundering, then sullen, it ebbed and left me!

A Flower...a Breeze...a capriced Moontide:
Three loves had I that were denied!
Dear God, one more I ask of You:
Give me a love that rhymes with True!

Morning and noon and fading light,
Then gone! The light of day!
Give me a love that's made of Fire
To warm my heart with its desire.
Give me a love for the dark of night,
That it may light my way!

TO EACH HIS OWN

Take back your heart! Hold back your tears!
Leave not their pain with me!
Mine own, I'll have throughout the years,
To keep me company!

WHEN THE HEART WEEPS ALONE

My heart wept softly as we parted,
Yet, straight and tall, though broken-hearted,
I stood and faced you with a smile,
A guise that veiled my hidden pain.

For though we talked of me and you,
And future days, how well I knew
Our love was for a little while,
And we would never meet again!

My heart wept softly as we kissed,
For fear that you would hear.
And though my heart was anguished so
To see our love a winging go
(And know the joy that would be missed),
I dared not shed a tear!

WHERE LOVE HAS GONE

Why is the night so long...so dark?
Where has the moonlight gone?
Why now so still, the singing lark?...
'Tis pain holds back the dawn!

Where are the scented flowers that grew
Down by the murmuring stream?
Vanished alike, with the love we knew,
Gone!...with you...and our dream!

REMINISCING

The Passion and the Pain,
The Rainbow and the Rain,
The Sweet and then the Bitter,
The Glow and then the Glitter.

The Moments then the Years,
The Smiles and then the Tears,
To Dream and then Awake,
To Love and then Forsake.

The Hope and then the Flight,
The Sunshine then the Night,
The Flowers and the Birds,
Then Anguish without Words...

Alas!...this must be Love!

ALPHA

God made the day, and then the night!
He made the sun and stars, so bright...
The flowers that bloom...the birds that sing...
The hate of wrong...the love of right!
He made mankind, and everything...
Then hanged it all upon a string!

TIME

I take to bed and close my eyes
To escape and forget a wasted day,
And hear a voice from the Past that cries:
"Where is the promise of yesterday?

"Your years have gone with the running sand,
You've dulled your heart and stilled your hand;
You've flung your gift of Time away,
Oh, where is the promise of yesterday?"

I cannot sleep! I toss and turn!
I know the truth I will not learn:
With a light, bright heart at life's first breath,
We touch this earth from some other death;
With a gift of Time, like purest gold,
To spend from youth till we are old.
And when this precious gift is spent
Or wasted on some ill intent,
We go at last from whence we came,
And there is only ourselves to blame.

Though old in years, but young in heart,
I promise myself a brand new start.
So, resolving again, at last to keep
Yesterday's promise, I fall to sleep.

Tomorrow then comes, and another tomorrow,
And forgetfulness comes...and with it comes sorrow.
As I toss on my bed, fighting for sleep,
The voice comes again from yesterday's deep:
"Your gold is all spent from the gift that I sent,
Your brow is all furrowed, your figure is bent.

"Where is the promise of hope and joy
That dwelt in the heart of a little boy?
Where, the great deeds that never came?
Where is the hope of success and fame?
All gone! All squandered! All wasted away!
Gone!...Like your promise of yesterday!"

WALK ON

You cannot live the past again,
For yesterday is gone.
So, smile and shrug away the pain,
Take heart...and then walk on.

For life will give another chance,
The sun, another dawn.
The ground on which your heart will dance,
Is firm, and so...walk on.

AN ANTHEM

If your life is long and of beauty bare,
Then let the poet's song be sung:
"Only the brave deserve the fair!
And only the good die young."
