You can bet, since I'm going to buy a horse, treats are going to be a important thing to me. But what exactly can horses HAVE? There is always the obvious, but I'm trying to get as complete a list as I can, so this is going to be constantly updated. Here are the only ones I know so far:
Apples:
Naturally when you think of horse treats, the 3 most common things pop into your mind, and probably the most common is Apples, how ever, these aren't the greatest treats, they're wonderful for an occasional treat, but if your going to be constantly showering them with treats, which i don't reccomend, you should limit they're apple eating to 1 a day, especially if it's a pony! Apples are packed with 2 things, natural sugar and vitamens, thats about it...
Carrots:
If Apples aren't the most common then carrots are! These are a lot better for your horse, they have more stuff for long term energy, and of course horses love them!
Sugar:
This is probably the 3rd most common treat, but it's probably the worst! That sugar will really rot they're teeth, but they sure love it! But as a REALLY occasional treat this is ok...
Stranger treats
---------------------------
Ok,
All though all horses are different, and have different treats, some of these are owrth a try...
Turnips:
Some horses just love turnips, a fresh, nicely cut up turnip is a good bet for a treat, and I have to admit, I like them to!
Corn:
Corn is a great treat, horses really enjoy them, and they are very healthy!
Lettuce:
A small amount of lettuce upon occasion makes in excellent treat, and your horse will probably love it!
Pumpkin:
To top off the list I'm giving you, pumpkins! It may sound wierd for a horse snack, but they do like it!
When giving your horse a treat, always be sure to give it to them in the palm of your hand with your hand laying flat, I was always certain he would swallow my entire hand all the way up to my shoulder blades, but i was with this gentle old horse and i picked up a few pieces of hay and offered it to him and he just lipped it right up! Also, if you want a wider veriety of things your horse can eat, it can eat just about anything you can, some horses like watermelon rind, and some horses even like potato chips! (I have never seen this done as a treat, but i imagine its probably plain, unflavored chips) Also, if you give a treat to the horse all the time, especially before the ride, it will expect a treat before it does ANYTHING! So always be careful with that! otherwise he may pull at your cloths, trying to find the treat, this may be funny the first or even the second time, but not ALL the time! Keep it a surprise, or use it for a reward, AFTER he does what you want, this way he learns good job = treat! However, the best reward is a kind word or a pat on the neck. |
