Hey! Remember GeckoLand? Well i decided that expage sDid you know that some geckos can fly, bark, and shed their skin? On this Website I will answer this questions, what do geckos eat, where do geckos live, the different kinds of geckos, and if geckos make good pets. I will also tell about the life cycle of a gecko.
Geckos live in a variety of climates. Leopard geckos usually are from India and Pakistan. The Fat Tail gecko is from western Africa. The Giant Madagascar Day Gecko is from the island of Madagascar. Desert geckos such as the Fat Tail gecko or Leopard gecko live on the ground and like to hide under branches. Tree geckos such as the Day gecko and House gecko live in trees and like it to be very humid.
Geckos eat a lot of different food. captive geckos eat mealworms, crickets, and waxworms. When geckos get 12 inches in lenth, you should feed them pinkies (baby rats) once a month. You can feed them wild bugs but don't feed them if you found them in a place that has been sprayed with bug spray. With Day geckos you should feed them peach or mango baby food as a treat. All geckos drink water. To feed them water you should have a shallow water dish.
There are many kinds of geckos. Some have sticky toes. Some lack sticky toes. Some popular aboral gecko's are the Tokay gecko, Day gecko, and House geckos. Some popular terrestial geckos are the Fat Tail gecko and the Leopard gecko. The most popular gecko overall is the Leopard gecko.
Geckos make very good pets! If you want to get a gecko follow these easy steps. First go to a pet store that has geckos. Look for the one that has the brightest skin with no bite marks in it. Then think to yourself if you have enough money and time. If you buy it you have to set up a cage. Get a 20 gallon long for terrestial geckos, 20 high for aboral geckos. Then buy bedding. If you have a desert gecko buy sand. If you have a aboral gecko buy "reptibark." Depending on the gecko your gecko you should have it like the geckos habitat. If you have a aboral gecko make it with sticks and fake plants. If you have a terrestial gecko have stuff like the desert. All geckos should have a hide box. A hide box is a place where the gecko can go to feel safe. It also reduces stress. For heat you need a heat lamp that has usually costs about $8.00. Put a 60 watt bulb with UV rays in it. Then you need a fluorescent light with UV rays. This will help bring out the geckos colors. For most geckos the tank should be at 80 - 95 degrees with a 10 degree drop at night. But research on your gecko to for the best temp. For the 10 degree drop I recommend that you keep the fluorescent light on at night and change the 60 watt to a 25 watt red lightbulb. The red light gives off heat but the gecko thinks it's night. If you have a aboral gecko you need to keep the cage at 70% humidity. To do this spray the cage 5 -7 times a day with luke warm water. You can also buy bubble dishes that with increase the humidity. You should always have a top if you have a tree gecko. I would recommend that you have one even if you have a ground gecko so nothing gets in the tank like baby hands or cats. Here are the average prices for popular geckos...
Day geckos-----$20.00 - $120.00
Leopard--------$20.00 - $65.00
Fat Tail-------$30.00 - $70.00
House----------$3.00 - $5.00
Tokay----------$12.00 - $40.00
The life cycle of a gecko is very interesting. First the gecko's mate. Then you will see that the female gecko is getting fatter. That's when you put in the nesting box. The nest box should have pete moss in it. When she lays her eggs take them and put them in a incubator. When the eggs hatch put the geckos in a tank away from the parents. After they shed their skin start feed them very small crickets. Then when are 9 months they are ready to breed. I have 1 Madagascar Giant Day Named ozzie, and 2 Fat tail gecko named Inkus and Chaka. To find care on Day geckos, Fat Tail geckos, leopard geckos, House Geckos, and tokay geckos go to their world....
