COURSE DESCRIPTION
The International Business course introduces the student to the opportunities, and constraints, posed by the ever-expanding business environment. This course will provide an overview of the concerns that may impact upon the modern manager in many organizations. Concepts such as multinational trade, trading blocs, legal issues involved in international commerce, as well as the importance of cultural/regional highlights will be presented. Through active involvement and outside-the-classroom research and study, the student will be encouraged to examine the wide range of issues in international business, including transnational transactions, communications, and transportation, as well as develop a more focused understanding of those issues directly affecting his/her career.

METHODOLOGY
There will be a pre-course individual research assignment to prepare the students for the activities completed during the study tour. There will be a post-course study-team project, and presentation, that applies the core competencies of the discipline to the study tour experiences.

GRADING POLICY
In accordance with Averett regulations, each student will receive a grade of A, B, C, D, or F. The grade of D is not applicable to graduate students as they are expected to maintain an above average grade. The grade will be derived as follows: A=100 to 94; B=93 to 87; and C=86 to 80.

Hill, C. W. L. (2000). International business: Competing in the global marketplace. (3rd ed.). Burr Ridge, IL: Irwin/McGraw-Hill.

CLASS SCHEDULE/ASSIGNMENT DUE
The pre-course individual assignment is due one week before departure to the Netherlands. The post-course Study Team assignment is due at the last workshop of the regularly scheduled course.

ATTENDANCE: Class attendance is mandatory. Students who miss more than two workshops will receive a failing grade. Standard policies with regard to absences will be discussed in class.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES: Students who have or may be dealing with a disability or learning difficulty should speak with the instructor or contact the Student Services Coordinator, Kendall Carter at 804.791.5842.

STUDY TEAM PROCESS
The study team dynamic is a key ingredient of participatory learning. Through the sharing of experiences, skills, and learning resources in a small, face-to-face study environment, student participants play a significant role in the learning process. To accomplish specific course outcomes, Averett College requires that each study team meet for a minimum of four hours per week at a site convenient to all members. A meeting log, completed each week, serves as a record of each team’s accomplishments, including the areas studied by the team. Each team participant must sign the form. The course facilitator is required to review and initial each study team log at the beginning of every workshop. There is no acceptable alternative to face-to-face meetings. This is an Averett policy, and is not left to the discretion of the facilitator.
