Ears
"placed high, not too large and not carried too flat. In France the tips of the ears are generally cropped, causing the ear to be semi-erect."

Clean your dogs ears weekly with a dry cottonball, (never with a cottonswab, then you are packing up the wax right by eardrum) and smell the ears for any unusual odors that might tip you off a potential wax buildup or budding infection, inflammation. Scratching and tilting the head are also indicators of a potential problem.
You should remove hair from his ears, the 3 enemies of the dogs earcanal are WAX BUILD UP, DIRT, and HAIR ...

..."LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE"
You can create more problems in a dog that doesn't have a history of earproblems by doing to much with the ear.

And Don't think you have to crop your dog's ears in order to decrease your dog's chances of an ear infection.

Pendulous ears are not primary cause of earinfections.

One of the reasons dogs(all breeds) have such a problem with earinfections is that they have a long almost "L-shaped" ear canal. The shape of the earcanal tends to allow discharge to puddle and pool by the eardrum. It doesn't drain, or ventilate well, so the resulting heat and humidity create a perfect environment for bacteria and yeast.

Much like humans, dogs develop 3 types of infection

OUTER EAR ( otitis externa )
MIDDLE EAR( otitis media )
INNER ERA ( otitis interna )

Many of these infections, if detected early are very treatable, and you can prevent some of them from occuring at all by cleaning and checking them regulary...
