This game takes place during a medevilish type of setting.
One-hundred-thousand years before the events of the first game, a man named Deston lived in his country as a soldier. He was a great warrior and worked his way up to the rank of a captain. He was ordered to find a band of thieves hiding in a secret hideout in the cave. Deston and five soldiers set out on a journey through the mountains. After a week of searching, Deston and his soldiers came upon an ancient ruin. The men thought that this was the thieves hideout, but could not find them anywhere. Deston and the soldiers fought off the strong monsters living inside the ruins and worked there way to the top of the temple where, on a pedestal, were three clear crystals. When Deston picked it up, he felt a strange feeling of power inside of him. The soldiers wanted to split the findings, but Deston didn't settle for this. Being the powerful warrior he was, he killed his soldiers and took all three crystals for himself. He stayed in the mountains with the supplies that all the soldiers had and lived there for five months. He learned how to use the crytals power and they made him stronger. With his incredible strength and wit, he returned to his country and recruited rebels from all around to join him. He killed many who did not join him and raided many towns. He persuaded many to join for the independence from the darkness and depression of the nation. His rebel group had grown large and they attacked their old country. Deston finished off his homecountry and was pronounced emperor of his new kingdom. He rules cruely with slavery and high taxes. With the power of the crystals, no one could stand up to him. After Deston started to get older, he didn't want the world to live on while he died. He tried destroying everything he could before he died. After Deston's death, the dark age had lifted and an age of peace had arrived. The new rulers decided to seperate the crystals so that no one would ever use them again. Each crystal went to a special shrine or temple, protected heavily by traps.
For 100,000 years, the crystals are never mentioned and Deston is forgotton.
