Hotaru is the Sailor Senshi of death and silence, Sailor Saturn in addition to being the
Princess of Saturn. To people who may not know her, Hotaru may appear to be very quiet,
shy, and a bit weak. But, to her friends and family, she is very bright, charming, kind,
and very caring. Because she loves to help people and make them better, Hotaru hopes to
become a nurse in the future. When Hotaru is in her Senshi form, Sailor Saturn, she is
mostly all business and very rarely messes around. She isn't the type of person to think
things through sometimes and this causes her to resort to tactics, or actions, that may
not have been thought of if Sailor Saturn followed the correct thought processes.
Hotaru's history isn't a long one, but a "semi-complicated" and very interesting one.
Years ago (maybe 4-7 years ago), Hotaru lived with her father, Tomoe Souichi (her mother,
Tomoe Keiko, died in a fire when she was very young). Because her father was a scientist
and she was very curious as to what he was up to, Professor Tomoe allowed Hotaru to come
into his lab and view an experiment of his (and watch him work). Unfortunately, there was
some type of devistating accident (explosion), leaving Professor Tomoe badly hurt, but
his daughter, Hotaru, dead. Seeing that his daughter was killed because of something he
thought he was responsible for (but really wasn't), he pleaded that Hotaru's life be
restored, at any cost. An evil force (known as Daimon Germatos) hears Professor Tomoe's
pleas for help and he and the Professor end up "striking" a deal: in exchange for the
restoration of Hotaru's life, Professor Tomoe had to agree to have his body possessed by
Germatos and form a group known as the Death Busters (whose purpose was to capture the
Holy Grail, summon their ultimate leader, Master Pharaoh 90, to Earth for it's (Earth's)
and the Universe's destruction).
Even though Hotaru didn't do a single thing in her life to deserve being associated woth
any evil beings of any sort, she ends up aiding the Death Busters (unconsciously) a great
deal. After Professor Tomoe finds out that the Holy Grail has been formed (thanks to the
efforts of Witches 5 and Death Buster member, Eudial), he (along with the Witches 5 MINUS
EUDIAL, since Eudial is killed after her final battle with the Sailor Senshi) realize
that there is only one person that they know who possesses enough strength to harness the
negative energy that the Holy Grail is capable of containing: HOTARU! When Kaolinite
(Professor Tomoe's assistant) captures Rini's (ChibiUsa's) Heart Crystal, she feeds it to
Hotaru, whose evil side is then brought to a true reality, the being that the 3 Outer
Senshi were trying to put a stop to: the Chimmoku no Messiah(Sovereign of Silence) of the
Death Busters, MISTRESS 9! After being manifested, Mistress 9 is able to take the Holy
Grail from Sailor Moon (by manipulating Sailor Moon's feelings for Hotaru's safety) and
use it to direct Master Pharaoh 90 to Earth and "silence" it. Once Master Pharaoh 90
reaches Earth, he attacks Mistress 9, almost killing her! It is in this weakened state
that the pure heart and soul of the TRUE Hotaru are finally able to break free from the
vil and corruption of Mistress 9 (and Hotaru is able to morph into Sailor Saturn.
Once she morphs, she swears to kill Master Pharaoh 90 NO MATTER WHAT, even if it means
sacrificing the Earth and her life in the process. Sailor Moon tries to reason with
Sailor Saturn, but Saturn warns Sailor Moon to let her do what she must do. Sailor Saturn
then enters the negative force that is Master Pharaoh 90 and begins to do battle. Seeing
that Saturn could be killed, Sailor Moon wishes with all of her might that she could
change into Super Sailor Moon and save Sailor Saturn. With the aid of the other Senshi's
powers (Uranus and Neptune included) , Sailor Moon is able to morph into her Super form.
Then, through the combined efforts of Sailors Saturn and Super Sailor Moon, Master
Pharaoh 90 is completely destroyed. SMS doesn't end there, though. Through the chaotic
blast, all of the Inner and Outer Senshi spot Super Sailor Moon with baby Hotaru in her
arms. This is because Super Sailor Moon wanted Hotaru to have a fresh, new start in life,
so she used her powers to turn Hotaru into a baby.
Once all is said and done, baby Hotaru is then placed in the care of the Outer Senshi
(Sailor's Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto). (*In the SM anime, Hotaru is returned to her
father, Professor Tomoe, who has since been "cleansed" from the evil that once possessed
him. In the SM manga, it's different in a few dramatic ways: Hotaru loses all of her
memories, Professor Tomoe dies, and the 3 Outer Senshi adopt her. Hotaru then regains all
of her memories and her identity as Sailor Saturn in the SMSS (Super S) manga, due to
Sailor Pluto's ability to speed up the growth of Hotaru for the purpose of Hotaru being
able to battle against the NEW enemy (the Dead Moon Circus). In the SMSS (Super S) anime,
we do not hear much from Hotaru (because she's a baby), or from the 3 Outer Senshi (since
they took off to travel around the world). It isn't until the SMSS (Sailor Stars) anime
that we see Hotaru once again (and in time enough for her to morph into Sailor Saturn and
give herself and the other 3 Outer Senshi a power boost into Super Senshi, making all of
the Outer's attacks even stronger than before).
Hotaru has many people that care for her and that look out for her, but her BEST friend,
her TRUE friend, is Rini. They're really good friends for 2 reasons: Hotaru and Rini are
around the same age and Rini was the first person to truly befriend her.
