| JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES |
 |
| The People, the Society, the Truth |
The purpose of this page is to dispell some of the rumors about Jehovah's Witnesses, and direct those who are sincerely interested to websites where they can learn more.
"Jehovah's Witnesses aren't Christians"
----- Nothing could be further from the truth. Jehovah's Witnesses do indeed believe in Jesus Christ...his origin in Heaven, his miraculous birth, the miracles he performed during his ministry, his sacrificial death and his resurrection. They do not, however, believe that Christ is God. They believe he is the Son of God, and the Bible supports their belief.
The rumor that J.W.'s are not Christians ma also stem from the fact that they do not celebrate Christmas. Their reason for not observing Christ's birth is quite simple: Jesus was not born on December 25th (even historical scholars agree on this note). The reason the date was chosen was because the Romans already paid homage to their gods on this day (would really be honorable to Jesus to celebrate his birthday on a day chosen to honor his "enemies"?). Also, there is no record of the Hebrews celebrating birthdays at all, and nothing in the Bible that command Christians to celebrate the birth of Christ. The Bible does, however, command us to celebrate his death (he told his disciples at the Last Supper "do this in rememberance of me").
"Jehovah's Witnesses are Fundamentalists"
----- Actually, Jehovah's Witnesses are usually in the middle: Conservatives call them liberals, liberals call them Fundamenalists, Fundamentalists call them a cult, cultists call them everything, right wingers call them communists, communists call them captalists, etc., etc., etc. What are they really? Christians.
"Jehovah's Witnesses break-up marriages"
----- Once again, most definitely NOT TRUE. In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses have very strict rules about divorce, and it is only permitted in certain specific situations. If a Brother or Sister has an unbelieving spouse who is not a Jehovah's Witness, they are encouraged to continue in the marriage arrangement, even if it means enduring persecution from the spouse (unless, of course, the situation becomes life threatening).
Where do these rumors come from? Most are spawned by pure ignorance. In some cases, people who wanted to learn more about Jehovah's Witnesses went to ex-witnesses (apostates) to get their information. I've alwasy considered this a little like going to the local chapter of the American Nazi party to learn about Judaism: obviously, you're going to get a biased (and bigoted) opinion. The best place to get info is "straight from the horse's mouth".
