| In recent years there has been some controversy over whether Jeet Kune Do is simply a concept or an actual martial art. The answer is quite simple. Jeet Kune Do itself is a concept, an idea of training & self-defense that can be applied to most all martial arts. The style of martial art that is unique to Bruce Lee is officially referred to as Jun Fan Gung Fu / Jeet Kune Do, meaning it's the specific modifcations of traditional kung fu (gung fu) made by Lee applying his Jeet Kune Do concepts. In his book, "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do", Lee draws from western fencing and boxing to come up with some new variations on traditional eastern martial arts. As in fencing, the lead hand is the primary weapon (as opposed to the rear hand in most martial arts). The fist used is similar to a type of fist used in boxing, and the basic stance is a slight variation of the fencing stance. NOTE: The chineese word "tao" is properly pronounced "dow". SUGGESTED READING "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do" by Bruce Lee -- Although this is not the only book Lee wrote about Jeet Kune Do, it is by far the most important. It is one of the most "in depth" martial art books I have ever read. "Jeet Kune Do Unlimited" by Burton Richardson -- Richardson has taken Jun Fan and combined it with some of his other martial arts training, which includes some african spear fighting. An interesting book. (NOTE: Burton Richardson was a student of Dan Inosanto, who was not only one of Bruce Lee's students, but is also the man who taught Lee to use the Nunchaku.)
