Crocodiles are ultimate survivores. They arisen 200 million years ago and outlived the dinosaures by about 65 million years! The reason why they are such good survivors is still unknown, but Dr. James Perran Ross has his theory. He thinks that crocs are such good survivores because they can adapt to their environment and they undergone a few changes. They can survive without eating for an entire year! They may look thin but they are still active. They have an awesome capacity to deal with starvation.




Parts of a Crocodile:

SKIN:
The neck, body, and tail have a thick layer of skin with interlocking scales (scutes) and bony buttons or plates (osteoderms) armor protection.

THROAT:
They may not be able to say words but they can vocalize.
Adults: they bellow in courtship and hiss and snarl at unwanted guest.
Babies: they make chirping sounds as calls for help.
There is a flap of skin in the back of a crocs throat which allows them to hold thier prey in their mouth while underwater.

EARS:
Crocs have good hearing, their inner ear is well developed, they have a movable flap to prevent water from entering the ear.

EYES:
Crocs have good vision. They can even see color to catch prey above water. But below water, their eyes are not perfect, they can't focus but they have a third protective eyelid called the nictitating membrane. It is not completly transparent.

TAIL:
Crocs have a powerful tale. It's tail is it's main thrust when swimming.

HIND FEET:
It's hind feet is webbed to improve balance and maneuverablilty when stationary or when moving slowly through water. When a croc wants to swim fast, it fold it's hind legs back and uses it's tail.

STOMACH:
Their stomach has two chambers, the first grinds up food and the second contains a digestive system that removes nutrients from food. Crocs have one of the most acidic digestive systems of any animal. It is so strong, it can digest bones, hooves, and horns!

MOUTH:
The muscles that open a crocs jaws are very weak. So weak that their mouth can be held closed with a rubber band.

TEETH:
Crocodiles lose and grow new teeth all the time. One croc can go through thousands of teeth in a lifetime. Crocs rarely chew their food, their jaws are used to catch prey. Their teeth are used to impale their prey. Crocs usually swallow their prey whole.
