The image above this arrow is somewhat like the Pierce, one of the earliest cars that was made. This is car is similar to the car that the Tweedy's bought. The car used alot of gas, more than the avg miles per gallon today, which is less that 14 miles to the gallon. As you can see this car was not made for comfort as cars todays are. The main motive back then when building cars was to find a fastest way to travel.
Toward the end of the book the tweedy family purchases a car, and the first and the only person to ever have something so modern in the primative town of Cold Sassy. At first this car was a object of envy, curiosity, and power. Most people of Cold Sassy were baffled by the sight of the car, but as soon as they came to their senses they acted as children that saw an ice cream man and ran after the car. Will's dad drove dilebrately by Grandpa Blakeslee's house to simply to show him who has the power. This car was a symbol to show progress. The car was more than just a car it was a step to being a more modernized town rather than having limited selections.

Another symbol in this book was the Sassofrass, the only one left in the town. As the book reaches an end it is chopped down to help expand the tracks, which was another sign of the city progressing into their "Progressive City".
