USEFUL INFORMATION
A-1, A-2 (noun)
A-1 and A-2 are the names for two types of rocket made by the Soviet Union. Both types burn liquid oxygen and kerosene fuel. The a-1 could lift five tonnes into low Earth orbit. The A-2 rocket was more powerful than the A-1, and was important for the Soviet space programme. It has been used to launch the Voskhod, Soyuz, Soyuz T, Soyuz TM and Progress spacecraft and many Cosmos satellites.
aberration (noun)
Aberration is the way the stars appear to shift their positions in the sky. This shift is due to the movement of the Earth as it orbits around the Sun, and also the fact that light travels at a particular speed.
Ablation (noun)
Ablation is the melting or evaporation of the surface layers of an object, such as a spacecraft or a meteorite. This happens when the object enters the Earths atmosphere at very high velocity. The process of ablation takes away part of the intense heat produced by air friction. Ablation of a spacecrafts heat shield prevents it from burning up as it re-enters the Ear4ths atmosphere.
Absolute magnitude (noun)
Absolute magnitude is the magnitude that a star would seem to have if it could be observed from a distance of 10 parsecs or 32.6 light years. It is related to the brightness of a star as seen by the human eye. A star of the first magnitude is 100 times brighter than a star of the sixth magnitude.

Absolute zero (noun)
Absolute zero is the lowest possible temperature. It is the zero of the absolute temperature scale, which uses the Kelvin unit for measurement. Scientists write zero Kelvin as OK. Absolute zero is the temperature at which the movement of atoms and molecules ceases.
Absorption spectrum (noun)
Absorption spectrum is a spectrum that is produced when electromagnetic radiation has been absorbed by matter. An absorption spectrum is produced when radiation from a very hot source, which has a continuous spectrum, passes through cooler material. Radiation is absorbed at certain wavelengths so that a pattern of absorption lines is shown on the continuous spectrum.
