| Survivors Speak Out Against Therapists who Abuse |
 |
There are times in our lives when we need to reach out to someone for help in making it through our problems and staying on the right course for our lives. We can't always go to friends or family. They may be too close or too involved to really support us. Because of this, many of us will turn to professional helpers such as therapists, counselors, social workers, ministers, etc.
During times of stress we are particularly vulnerable. We need to have someone to open up to, to talk to, to cry with, etc. For the most part, professional helpers are ethical, moral, sincere professionals who are there to help the client through their painful life situation. However, there are those who will take a client's emotional vulnerability and exploit it to meet their own needs. The damage to the exploited client is often irreversible and may leave the client in worse shape than before they ever went to counseling.
Sexual exploitation is the most common type, however, it may take the form of verbal abuse, disrespectful treatment, financial exploitation, power games and many other things.
I want this site to be a source of strength, healing, and support to anyone who has gone through this valley. Also I hope that it will serve as a source of education and information for professionals who work with clients who have suffered at the hands of another counselor. Most of all I want it to be a place where we can learn from one another and find the strength and courage to live "one day at a time" while working through our hurt and finding new meanings for our lives.
