The Victorian Era is in full swing, the Gilded Age is off and running, Ulysses S. Grant is President, Reconstruction is grinding to a halt along with the world economy, and the world continues to deteriorate. Yes, once again it's 1873, and there are no such things as typewriters, aeroplanes, televisions, corporations, or social security. Schooling is for the well-to-do, and illiteracy is rampant.

Chronology

9 January -- Napoleon III dies.

18 January -- Lord Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton dies.

21 January -- "Sex in Wages" (editorial) appears.

February -- Ashantee War begins in Africa.

4 March -- Ulysses S. Grant begins his second term as President of the United States.

18 April -- Justus, Baron vol Liebig, dies.

1 May -- Postcards are introduced in the U.S.

24 May -- Thiers resigns as President of France.
